We just need a new paradigm...new way of looking at things.  First, we have to realize how much we need each other as we age. Second, we must talk about our wants and needs and be proactive in getting them met.  Third, we have to get creative and think outside the old, established box.

Thoughts On Aging Boomers

A List of "Generations"

  • "Greatest" - born before 1928 - are now 88 - 100 (no info on numbers)
  • "Silent" - born between 1928 and 1945 - now 70-87 (47 million)
  • "Boomers"- born between 1946 and 1964 - now 51-69 (78 million)
  • "GenX"      - born between 1965 and 1980 - now 35-50 (55 million)
  • "Millenial" - born between 1981 and 1997 - now 18-34 (74 million)

Concerns For The "Boomers" and The Two Younger Generations

The two younger generations are very worried about we Boomers because we are living longer than ever before; because there are so many of us; and because we are "dying longer" - meaning there's an ever-increasing span of time between 'fine' and 'dead'.  Advancements in medical technology have created this good news/bad news situation.

Those coming up after us are afraid we're going to totally deplete all resources for retirees...specifically SS and Medicare/Medicaid.

My dire prediction is this:  As we move further into the retirement and old age of Baby Boomers we're going to see diminishing resources leading to decreasing concern by younger citizens for the problems and needs of the elderly population.

We seniors have our own set of concerns. The top 5 fears of today's elderly citizens are:

  1. Fear of social losses
  2. Fear of financial insecurity
  3. Fear of cancer & other debilitating diseases
  4. Fear of loss of independence
  5. Fear of cognitive failures such as dementia & Alzheimers disease

These are valid fears.  But here's the good news:  We Boomers have always solved our problems with amazing innovative creativity and we're not going to stop just because our hair is gray and our joints ache!

Here are just a few ideas for new ways of being old: Senior Homesharing Programs, Senior Bartering Arrangements, and Call-Buddy Systems

Remember: we're here to walk each other home.
